What is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)?

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the first line evidence based treatment for OCD. ERP is a behavioral therapy designed to expose individuals to situations that cue obsessions and distress while helping clients to refrain from compulsions. ERP is considered the “optimal treatment” for OCD and has shown greater effectiveness than stand alone drug treatments, like clomipramine, for the treatment of OCD.

ERP therapy has vigorous scientific support for its effectiveness as a treatment for OCD. However, research protocol ERP is a vigorous treatment. It requires twice weekly sessions of 90 minutes, between session phone check ins, and home visits as needed.

The treatment protocol requires between 17 and 25 sessions as well as booster sessions after formal treatment has ended to ensure continued control of symptoms.

ERP assists those suffering with OCD by teaching them they can approach situations that they typically avoid and can tolerate the distress and uncertainty which results from living in an unpredictable world.

At Great Lakes OCD, we are committed to providing clients with the best empirically supported ERP treatment possible. If you are interested in ERP treatment at Great Lakes OCD, please call or text 269-319-3110 to schedule a free consultation. You can also email info[at]ocdmichigan.com.
